Bach Art Fugue
Is Bach's The Art of Fugue meant to be performed?
One of Bach's final works, Some experts think it was meant to be "eye music" only, for studying and learning from, others disagree. I'd be interested in any opinions and reasons for them.

Thus far it's tending towards being educational but this not detracting from it's aesthetic merits (in doses). By the way I can't play myself if that's what you meant!
The answer is that Bach didn't tell us. But Bach was a practical musician who didn't waste time on "eye music". Again, it is playable; if he had wanted to write music not for performance, he might have been less scrupulous about the placing of some of the melodies.
Finally, it works brilliantly in performance. I have sat through the lot, as one of a spellbound audience. Nobody found it overlong, boring or dry and didactic: just splendid music.
